Reiki, as defined on Google, is a healing technique based on the principle that the therapist can channel energy into the patient by means of touch, to activate the natural healing processes of the patient’s body and restore physical and emotional well-being.  It has a Japanese origin, which translates as “universal life energy”.  It sounds so empowering and positive…definitely part of a holistic lifestyle.

Reiki starts with an underlying belief that everyone has energy that flows through his or her body.  If the energy is low, a person will more likely be sick or stressed.  If the energy is high, the person will more likely be joyful and well.  At a very simplified level, this makes a lot of sense because when we are sick, we feel low and when we are physically healthy, our spirits are high.  So, before the session begins, the Reiki practitioner will want to discuss anything that is bothering the individual so that they will know what areas to concentrate on.  The practitioner will lay hands on or above the individual’s body, depending upon the recipient’s personal space comfort level. He will start at the hands and move to the standard Reiki hand positions, which is towards the opposite end of the individual’s body.  The Reiki recipient will feel a warm sensation or a feeling of complete relaxation.



Although Reiki is not assigned to any particular religion, it does have a spiritual nature.  “There is nothing that you must believe in order to learn and use Reiki.  It is not dependent on a belief at all and will work whether you believe in it or not.  Mikao Usui, the founder of the Reiki system, recommended that Reiki promotes peace and harmony, which are nearly universal across all cultures.

These ideals are not religious in nature, but act in such a way that people are reminded of how to lead their lives and treat others.  If these simple ideals were followed, everyone would be a lot healthier and happier.



Although some people may want to stick with a completely natural course of therapy, Reiki can be used in coordination with traditional medical and other therapeutic techniques to encourage healing.  It can also be used even if there are no physical or emotional issues present. The point is that Reiki promotes a sense of relaxation, peace and well-being.  Everyone deserves to feel relaxed and peaceful, right?

“An amazingly simple technique to learn, the ability to use Reiki is not taught in the usual sense, but is transferred to the student during a Reiki class.  This ability is passed on during an “attunement” given by a Reiki master and allows the student to tap into an unlimited supply of “life force energy” to improve one’s health and enhance the quality of life”, according to The International Center for Reiki Training.  Classes are being taught in many different countries and levels I and II are offered for training. A LRMT (Licensed Reiki Master Teacher) will need to complete a 3-year training program.

Reiki has become a more popular mode of healing and an online search will often show practitioners right in your area.  Just browse for them thru the net and you will find resources on Reiki practitioners and information about training classes.
